Issa Rae, the genius behind The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl and now HBO’s Insecure, is effectively breaking stereotypes surrounding black women and gender roles. With her witty screen-writing and extremely realistic storylines, Ms. Issa, as she is fondly known to her students on the new HBO favorite, has found a way to reshape those images normally associated with Black people and entertainment without making it a “thing”.
Rae is making it clear that her stories are a specific experience and not a general experience that all Black women should be measured by. Yet, the artist does know that her show is revolutionary. In an interview with NPR she expressed, "It's so basic ... but we don't get to do that. We don't get to just have a show about regular black people being basic." So whether Rae intends to break the mold or not, she’s successfully doing it!
