The C A T A L Y S T exhibit is a series of photographs and visuals celebrating Black women. These images juxtapose Street Etiquette’s Black Ivy editorial shoot and complement Lean In by Nell Scovell and Sheryl Sandberg. The images illuminate a hidden identity while emanating power, grace, and a fluidity between "roles."
C A T A L Y S T was created in an effort to shatter the glass around the roles women have been assigned in contemporary society; who they can be, what they can wear and how they choose to carry themselves.
DC’s own Lloyd Foster and Roderick Johns photographed the project, which features 17 DC women who are artists and entrepreneurs in their own right. AFROVELVET’s founder, Malissa Wilkins, styled and co-directed the project, alongside creative curator, Kelcey Abney.

AFROVELVET is also pleased to be showcasing local female artists at the Opening Reception. Throughout the evening, the featured women will introduce their brands, and attendees will experience vegan hors d'oeuvres provided by Unfazed Beauty.
DC residents can view + purchase C A T A L Y S T pieces until April 18th both at the studio or online following the opening reception.
Come with a willingness to support local artists. And be prepared to collect new pieces for your living room, office or studio!
